The steady star in the well's depth

The steady star in the well's depth
moves, the field swings, an eye
is drawn aside, a traverse made,
a depth of night drawn overhand,

-

drawn deep, from the sky, a silent flood
unseen but swift, from every cleft
and hollow in the earth. Past
oneself, it points, the adumbration

-

whose one finger is laid out: the star's
unchanging depth is seen remote
and light through all the weight
and movement of the planetary sphere.
