Karen Armitstead
was trained at Manchester along with Sarah Longlands and
Alan Singleton, both fine artists, but she in the textiles department,
specialising in embroidery. Soon she was very soon experimenting
with all kinds of techniques, using her poor hard working machine
to stitch through enormously thick layers of paper and cloth.
Her graduation show was nearly a sell-out.
She married her husband Tony before she had finished at art college,
but now that their three girls are getting older she has decided
to return to her studies, and now, armed with her PGCE teaches
in adult education at Blackpool and Fylde College. As well as
this she teaches textiles to the preliminary Foundation Course
or people planning to take a BA in fine art.
Her work has changed much over the last few years, as can be
seen by looking through these images. They always, though, have
a vibrant, impressionist style, are richly textured and a joy
to look at.
